maternity shopping

June 29, 2007 · 10 Comments

After running some errands and driving my brother to his job, I decided to stop at the mall and pick up a few new Yankee Candle scents. Of course I had to pass by the Motherhood Unnamed Maternity store to get to Yankee Candle, so I decided to stop in a see if I could nab some great finds. They have great tank tops for only 7.50 and I am definitely all about those this summer.

What you have to know about pregnant women is that some of us aren’t super comfortable with our expanding bodies, even though we know it is only for a season that we are all puffed up, we still feel less than gorgeous. Some of us still have innie belly buttons, which tend to look like the Grand Canyon in the middle of our snug t-shirts. Our chests have exploded and some of us have just gotten big all over. Knowing that, shopping can be a difficult experience to find something that looks nice on the body that we think looks like a whale.

Enter in 20 year old college student that works there.

“So, can I help you find something?”

“Um, I’m okay, just looking.” (as I browse through the sale racks)

“Here, I thought you might like these. I’ll start a dressing room for you.” She shows me several items clearly 2 sizes bigger than I need.

“Uh, thanks.”

“Don’t feel bad about how you look, I put on the fake belly and I look RIDICULOUS pregnant. So it can’t be that bad.”

Great, I think, you weigh 90 pounds soaking wet and have twigs for legs. I’m sure you looked ridiculous.

I smiled.

“So, are you looking for a particular color or style?”

“Not really, whatever may catch my eye I guess.”

“Yeah, by this point you are probably not worried about fashion or how things look, just for something that fits you, right?”

I wanted to shake her! Not worried about fashion or how things look, just something that fits over my expanding tummy? Mind you I am 5 months pregnant, and I am not enormous yet. Hello! I still want to look pretty and I don’t want to be wrapped in a burlap cloth!

I politely tried to explain that while fit is important, so is looking nice and feeling confident about yourself. She didn’t have a clue. I bought the tank tops and 1 shirt- I could have found more but I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Do they train these people???? Do they know that pregnant women have all sorts of emotions and crazy hormones floating around? Thankfully I’ve been pretty much on the up and up, otherwise I am not sure if I would have bit my tongue.

In other news, I have finished the back of my Paton’s V-Neck Sweater and am now on the sleeves. I have decided to knit both at once, even though it takes longer to get some length, at least you know you have the same number of rows on each sleeve. I don’t really like keeping track of every row and then repeating the exact same thing.

My secret pal package arrived:

I am so blessed by my secret pal! She has hooked me up with goodies galore- and what has been almost as tempting as the infamous Tim Tams is the Jo Sharp cotton… how I want to cast on for it’s intended camisole. The color is so gorgeous and the yarn is so lovely but I must finish the sleeves of my Paton’s Sweater. Must finish the sleeves!

My Secret Pal also knit me a few cute items, and I’ll share two today:

A little watermelon hat and the baby kimono from the Mason Dixon Knitting book I have been admiring for so long! The little hat is poised on a grapefruit, as I have read in a few knitting books that a grapefruit is the approximate size of a newborn’s head. So small and yet I wince at the thought of squeezing that out.

In sewing news, the fabric for the baby’s room has arrived, some from Purl and some from Caroline Creative. I won’t be working on the baby stuff for a while, too many sewing projects in queue, but soon enough.

Happy crafting!

SP10 arrives!

June 1, 2007 · 5 Comments

Check out my second SP10 gift from my Secret Pal who lives ALLLL the way in Australia! She is the best! This is just a sampling of the goodies she packed into one box. Who knew the mail could bring such fun? SHe also sent me this beautiful sock yarn that I just can’t wait to figure out how to makes socks with…

And a little gift for a swap mama is on the way to… via secret pal to Lynne!

I did finish the booties… but gifted them away before I got a picture of them! I’ll try to snag a photo of the baby wearing them next week.

New York City was a whirlwind of a weekend- but aren’t all weekend trips like that?

This was as close as I got to the Statue of Liberty. We were too busy eating everything in Brooklyn to see her. Maybe next time Lady Liberty.

Tonight we are off to the Greek Festival in town. MMM MMM good!

Back from the great beyond…

May 11, 2007 · 10 Comments

I have been MIA. Not only that, but I have hardly read any blogs since returning from San Diego and I… umm.. have not knit one stitch! The horror!

I went from a daily routine of getting up everyday, blogging, going to work, the gym, the running crazy around the house to a more relaxed schedule in my time off. I have filled that “relaxed” schedule with major home projects and organization, some call it nesting….. and I feel like I am busier now than when I was working full time! Weird.

I have received some wonderful gifts from my special swap partner Katie, who sent me on a virtual trip to the Islands!!! Such gorgeous yarn- that’s starting to get me motivated! Plus Mango tea… mmmm.

Next, my super secret pal from Australia sent me this amazing package- not that only one of the three boxes of Tim Tams are present… the other two disappeared.. mmm mmm good. I love the color yarns that my swappers have sent me- I’ve got to get a summer type project or baby project on the needles… That and a rocking chair for our deck.

In the past year we have become quite the hockey fans of our

Gray days and silver lining in the mail

February 24, 2007 · 11 Comments

What a day! My MRI consult was supposed to be yesterday (yes, please remember *supposed to*).

I arrived promptly at 2 pm for my 2:10 appointment. In case you didn’t know, I am punctual to a fault.

I proceeded to wait for almost 2 hours because of various emergency injuries that came in, which I am fine with. If I had a broken bone sticking out of my leg, I would want to go ahead of the knitting lady who needs her MRI read so she can run again. So I have no issue with waiting… I brought my yarn to finish embroidering something but I should have brought my DPN’s because I could have knit the entire waiting room matching socks by the time I was *seen.*

I am finally called back… and I sit and wait some more. The doctor comes in, says a few things, looks at my chart and MRI report… and tells me that he didn’t think that he was the doctor I was supposed to see- that another doctor was the ordering physician and I should see him. GREAT. I drag myself back up to the front desk and the doctor I need to see is out of the country on vacation until next week.

“You’re kidding me.” I said.

“No, I’m not. I can reschedule you for March 5th.”

“Why didn’t somebody figure out this before I waited for two hours?”

“We have a meeting on Monday to address some administrative issues and I assure you, I will bring this up.”

Apparently there was an administrative meltdown in the office and the person scheduling wasn’t supposed to be scheduling, but there was no back-up person available, blah blah blah.

Which leads me to my conclusion that secretaries run the world. Because if we mess up or are sick, the whole place is in shambles.

So I wait until March 5th. And I am calling to verify that the correct doctor will be there.

Then I came home to find this on my doorstep:

Mt Hearts and Roses Swap gift! Isn’t Susan amazing? What a wonderful package! The yarn is Lorna’s Laces in a stunning pink and orange colorway. I have never worked with this yarn and I feel so professional to have it! There is a beautiful needle case that I need to start using TODAY so my needles aren’t haphazardly all over the place. I wouldn’t want anyone to sit on them! My package also included Knitting Rules, by the Yarn Harlot. Candy, tea, candles, bookmark, and beautiful cards. Thanks Susan! And thanks Lynne, for organizing. I can’t wait for the next theme!

Also in the mail yesterday was my long awaited Kare Kingbury book, Forever. I have to get all my work done before even cracking that book open, because once I do… I won’t put it down until it’s finished! I will be getting a cardio working as a rush around the house cleaning and doing laundry so I can read my book!
